Why Tesla Dog Mode turns off when you drive
Short answer: Tesla Dog Mode is designed to end as soon as you drive. It keeps the cabin comfortable while the car is parked, and once you get back in and drive off, it switches itself off. So if your dog rides with you to several places, you have to turn Dog Mode back on at every stop. Climate Keeper does that for you: it turns Dog Mode back on each time the car is in Park.
What Dog Mode does
Dog Mode keeps the heating or air conditioning running on battery power while you are away from the car, at the temperature you set. It also:
- shows a large message on the touchscreen saying your pet is fine and the owner will be back soon, along with the cabin temperature, so passersby don’t worry;
- lets you check the cabin temperature from the Tesla app;
- warns you in the Tesla app if the battery gets low. Tesla limits Dog Mode at about 20% charge.
You can start it on the touchscreen climate controls or from the climate screen in the Tesla app.
Why it switches off when you drive
Dog Mode is a parked-car feature. While you are driving, the climate system runs normally and the “owner will be back soon” screen makes no sense, so the mode ends when you drive away. The car doesn’t remember to turn it back on at your next stop.
Why that matters on errand days
A single stop is easy: set Dog Mode, get out. The trouble is a day like this:
- Vet: Dog Mode on.
- Drive to the pharmacy: Dog Mode turns off.
- Pharmacy: set Dog Mode again.
- Drive to the grocery store: off again.
- Grocery store: set it again, or forget to.
Every stop is another chance to forget, and in summer or winter the cabin temperature changes fast once climate stops.
Your options
- Set it on the touchscreen at every stop. Works, as long as you never forget.
- Set it from the Tesla app after you get out. Handy if you remember halfway across the parking lot.
- Let it re-enable itself. Climate Keeper watches whether the car is in Park and, when it is, turns Dog Mode (or Keep or Camp mode) back on. You choose how long, from 30 minutes to 12 hours. When the time runs out it stops, and your phone gets a notification.
Climate Keeper only acts when the car is in Park and not moving. It connects through the official Tesla Fleet API with a virtual key you approve in the Tesla app and can remove at any time; your Tesla password never reaches it.
Keep checking on your dog
Dog Mode, with or without Climate Keeper, does not replace you. Tesla’s guidance is never to leave a pet in the car for long periods and to keep an eye on the cabin temperature. Keep the Tesla app’s notifications on, and come back quickly if the battery warning appears.
